Title: The Cougar
Miles traveled: 5 miles. (off day)
Woke up on the end of New Shawneetown. off the side of the road and had an hour walk into town. The town was moving although you can definitely see that it had better days. The city had a large middle grass park and all the stores were around on the sides. A lot of the stores were closed but they had a few bar and restaurants that were open and a gas station with a deli.
I kicked it in the back of one of the gas stations for a while. I didn't run out of friendly people to talk to as I was sitting on one of the three tables. I also worked on hitting up my friend who said he was going to be in a town called Carbondale 60 miles away for the week. His name is Kieth, we went to high school together and had a lot of fun doing Shanangins as teens and young adults.
He told me that he is down to kick it in Carbondale, I told him i would try to hitch in a ride closer so he didn't have to drive the whole way.
Just as I told him that a gentalmen whos name was Bob overheard me talking to him and offered me a ride there in the morning, sweet. I told him I would meet him at the gastation at 9am.
Kicked it in the gas station for a little longer, met a dude who biked across the united states. He had an amazing beard. I complemented him and his friend responded that it was town famous. He was on the gas stations bulletin board with an sdvertisment of his wood working. He was apparently a master carpenter, Sweet!
Started to get bored sitting in the gas station, searching for a more exciting time I jumped over to the vet bar in town, a Legion. Kicked it with the people in the bar, they were all mostly old men. They were nice, they bought me a couple of brews and even my food. How awesome? I also learned a lot about the corn industry and the huge financial gains large corn farmers are making due to government subsides.
It was nice kicking it in the bar with the older folks but I was seriously looking for some younger company. I was told in the bar that there was another bar in town where some young people occasionally go. I said that sounded sweet and headed over.
Inside I met an awesome bartender. She was a good looking older women with kids and a husband. She worked the bar at night and during the day was a school bus driver. We talked about my walk and then also about her life, how it is like being a bus driver, how to disaplin kids, and also her dream of traveling and taking a long road trip. She lit up a lot of cigarets in the bar that night, some times she would talk with it lose around her lips.
She was really nice and even bought me a beer with her tip money. Thank You!
Later some more women joined the table. Everyone was pretty nice and they all shared a little bit about their lives. Later as the night went on two of the Women wanted to go check out another bar in Old Shawnee town, a town that was flooded in the 30s. They asked it I wanted to come along. I was down to go check out the old town.
I jumped into the car with a 40 year old mom with a 17 year old daughter. She was on the heavy side with big poofy hair.
We got to the bar and met this blond kid, Chase, who was 22 years old who had been drinking there the whole night. He reminded me of a surfer bro at home, he was very carefree and had blond hair.We all drank up and the moms started to hit hard on us.
There was this older women there, Dotty, who seemed to have a mental disorder, she yelled a lot of obscene things. Chase had amazing rapport with everyone at the table. He knew exactly what to say to Dotty to make her his friend and seemingly fall in love with him. He was pretty messed up though. He told us he was craving to smoke some weed so he went to go pick up from his friend and come back.
Meanwhile, two other dudes joined us outside the bar. One sort of geeky looking large guy and another guy who was fit with a goate. They were pretty messed up, just chilling around, they later left.
Chase came back and started to smoke it up, everyone sort of turned their attention to him, I was enjoying his kicks.
Later those two guys came back that we had met while Chase was gone. They were drunk as hell and drove a two person roaring loud sand go-cart on to the lot where we were chilling outside the bar. They were screaming saying that the cops were after them, but that they dodged them down the road through a corn field. They said they were screwed if the cops found them They were completely wasted.
They jumped back into the go cart and blared out of the lot cheering like mad men, the chunky geeky kid behind the wheel shaking his face with his fist proudly in the air.
When they left the 40 year old mom that dove me to the bar had her 17 year old daughter walking up crying from the road. She said "what now!?". Her daughter walked up and said that her boyfriend dropped her off and she needs a ride home, they were going through a fight. She called up the boy and told him to come back and asked him why in heavens name he left her daughter on the side of the road, she was pissed with him.
The daughter was really upset with her mom saying "You don't know what she has put me through." and ran off and started crying on the side walk.
I stood there thinking about her and thinking about her mom. One of the first things that her mom brought up was her gorgeous daughter when I first met her at the bar. It was clear that she loved her...
I had to talk to her, I worked up the courage to go and sit down with her at the side walk, leaving the group from the outside of the bar. I sat down and said something along the lines "listen, I know you don't know me but I am a guy walking across the country... Ect and I met your mom today at the bar...and do you know what they first thing she started to talk to me about was? It was you. I know I'm a stranger, but I could tell that she really loves you..." I told her that parents never get taught how to be parents and that they are also living their own lives. In the end she stopped crying and started to agree with me. I gave her a hug on the shoulder and said that I hope it all works out with your boy. She said thank you. I think what I said helped.
The night went on, and the ladies got drunker and started hitting on us. The one that drove me asked "So... Do you guys want to get naked?" There was no way i was going to hook up with a 40 year old mom. Chase looked at her and replied "I mean, Ill let you suck my dick. I'll let any women suck my dick, but I'm not going to do anything other than that, I'll just lay there." The way he said it made me laugh.
After asking us like three times and trying to give us another beer, Chase mentioned that he was heading out and I was welcome to crash at his place. I said awesome and grabbed my bag out of the ladies car. I did not want to have her drive me back to the other bar, I was getting uncomfortable with her persistent advances.
I started walking with chase, when he started telling me how he has done some "fucked up things in this town". He was drunk and being loose with his words.I started feeling really uncomfortable and i started to think that he was going to rob me once when I got back to his place. He could have been a great dude, and I feel bad because I didn't give him a full shot, but I trust my intuition and see red flags when they rise up. I complained that I was drunk and felt like vomiting and told him to go on with out me. I sat down and he walked away. I was feeling fine.
