Title: Meeting up with Keith
I woke up in a corn field with less than 4 hours of sleep and packed my tent and mat and made my way to a gas station where I was told I would be picked up for a ride down towards Carbondale to see my friend Kieth who was in town.
Sure enough 10 min after I got there the gentlemen, bob, I had met earlier at the gas station the other day was their to come pick me up. We drove down the street together and he told me about big floods that have hit the town and how New Shawnee town was created after the flood destroyed Old Shawnee town.
It was interesting. He showed me all sorts of farm field that was under water.
"You see that land there, yeah, that was under water. " , "That farm there was lucky, slightly higher ground, he had a decent crop", "Oh that farm, that was destroyed".
I was "oohing and aahing " at everything he was saying with a big smile.
He dropped me off and wished me luck 10 miles outside Carbondale. Thank you!
Called up Keith to let him know I was around. He drove up in his sports car and we had an awesome embrace. It was really nice to see someone that I knew. We drove down road talking about my trip and talking about his new marriage. His wife was finishing up boot camp in Texas and he was driving down to be there for her.
He loves his wife. When Keith told us he got married (it was a quick thing) we were all stunned, he introduced his wife at a party to most of us. She was a very nice and pretty girl. Keith has alway been a lady man, but we never thought he would be the first to settle down. While I was hanging out with him a lot of what he talked about was her. He is crazy about her.
His wife was set back a week from graduating because her platoon under preformed, yet her personal performance was stellar. So Keith decided to see some friends in Illinois, perfect timing!
He drove us down to go check out some of the nature in the area. Illinois is pretty awesome, there were all sorts of bluffs where we were and everything was stunningly beautiful. He took me to a local challenge called "tight mans squeeze". Where you had to go into a tight crevasse and climb up a series of natural steps to get up to the top of the bluff. Making a 90 degree turn in the middle everything gets really tight even for a skinny guy like me. Inside the split it was dark and wet. I got to the end and was a little bit stuck, kieth had to pull my arms to help get me out. It failed the first time, and I'm not going to lie, I was a little nervous.
We later went around to check out some trails. I got caught up climbing on a bluff to the top. Kieth was easily amazed and started to film everything I was doing, I'm really glad he did. The photos came out awesome.
We later went back to his friends place where he was staying, Dave's and Jasmine, a married couple with a young daughter. We hung out there for a little bit and went to do our laundry.
Later we kicked it with his friend Chris who was down to hit up some bars with us. We drove around town checkin out all of the hot spots. We drank some booze and had some fun.
Later as we were heading out of the bars we ran into one of Chris's friends who had told us that one of the guys we had just met at one of the bars spinning got in a huge fight and had to get air lifted to saint louis. He had been in the fight trying to get some guys off but he ended up with a bloody nose and a beat up face. They were talking about how who ever did it was going to pay.
We ended the night over at Chris's house chilling out. I slept on the floor and it was wonderful.Thank you!
