Title for the day: Finding the Knobstone Trail
Woke up with the dog by me (last night this stray dog that had came into the hicks property that was stealthily taking food and digging into things causing all sorts of havoc). I did think for a minute , what if he came with me... He was pretty annoying last night, but laying there right next to me, I saw that poor dogs heart.
Greg gave me a call and told me he would be back in 10 min so I could jump in the shower. I had already started packing up my stuff and had it all ready to go by type time that he pulled up on his drive way. He went to go pick up phill. He came out of the car and handed me a breakfast sandwich! awesome! Thank you!
I ate it up and then Greg showed me to the shower. So awesome! After I bathed up Greg offered to take me back to where he picked me up last night. I accepted. We said goodbye and I started towards Clark State Forest, where I was to meet up with the Knobstone Trail.
Big Thanks to the Hicks for everything!
I had to resupply and Henryville was only a mile away. So I decided to take the 2 mile there- and- back detour to go into town. Made a stop into subway. Met Franky, the dude whomade my sandwich. He was a hard worker, he told me that he works close to 60 hours a week. He was working a 11 hour shift that day! Whoa!
Stopped by a Family Dollar to pick up on some food before I hit the forest.
Jumped back up toward Clark Forest, the trail was a few miles in, had to take roads to intersect with it. Steep roads they were. I had a map with me of the trail, but when I got to the point where I thought the trail should intersect, it was no where to be seen. Well then...
I searched some more, and more. Then sat down to look at some trail journals of some other hikers who had walked the ADT to see if they encountered problems here. Turns out they did. They couldn't find the trail head and had to backtrack and skip the Knobstone trail... Darn
I was so determined to get on this trail, so I used all my resources, iPad and Internet tethering through my phone, to try and see what I am missing here.
Pulling up some different maps I finally found where I messing up. I searched in the new spot where I thought it was, and boom down a ravine I saw it! Yes!
( for other hikers who might have trouble here, if you hit beach road you have gone to far. From the fire tower you will hit a air traffic control facility up the road where the road comes to a junction, go back 100 yards and shoot down into the ravine on your right, there is no clear path... just bomb it...And Presto!)
Problem though! I drank a half a days worth of water searching for it, I didn't feel safe attempting it with out a little bit more. The sky was also going black, storm was coming.
I decided to head back towards a picnic shelter that I had passed earlier about a mile down the road. There was some water over there gathered in one of the roads potholes that looked pretty clear that I was down to go for.
Got there and gathered up water, there was two people there when I got up. They were lovers... I think... The girl was much more attractive then the dude. They talked to me a little bit, the guy said that there was a creek down the hill when he saw me taking it from the road. He said that he has traveled all through the woods, he may have even buried a few bodies in there. I said with a chuckle in my voice,"is that a confession? There is no statue of limitation on murder." He said "I nearly took his life, if it wasn't for her (pointed to the girl ) I would have"
Interesting. I wasn't down for going all the way down the hill for the creek, but I thanked him for the advice.
I unpacked my tent and started to set up for the night. As I was doing so the dude started yelling at the girl from across the way. Couldn't really make out what he was saying... Sounded like the girl just dropped a bomb on his heart... Ouch... I could tell the dude was yelling stuff he would soon regret. She started to drive away and he got in his car, slammed the door, and backed up like a demon, and blocked the road before she could get out. She just drove the other way. He chased after, screaming " I have one more thing to say!"
Hope it all works out...
I started cooking dinner, heard something creeping up on me, throw on my light and saw a raccoon just about to get into my stuff. Pesky raccoon! I chased after it with my knife ( I wasn't going to kill it, just wanted to frighten it ). It kept coming around 3 more times before I think I finally scared it not to come back. It was a cleaver coon though, trying all sorts of different approaches to get to my bag. I kinda liked the dude.
As I started to go to bed, I saw lightening in the distance, within a half an hour the sky was sonic booming and lightening was striking everywhere.
Picnic shelter was amazing, slept like a king.
